Understanding the Learning Purpose
Students understand what they are learning, why it matters, and how it connects to what they already know.
This focus area helps teachers build clarity, purpose, relevance, and readiness before students begin new
learning, so students are not simply completing tasks without understanding the learning behind them. This
focus area is not about students seeing a learning intention at the start of the lesson. It is about whether
students can explain the learning in their own words, understand why it matters, and connect it to prior
knowledge, experience, culture, community, place, or future learning.
